Ingredients
to make Kottayam Fish Curry
:
    Directions
    to make Kottayam Fish Curry
    :
  • 1)Heat about a quarter of a cup of coconut oil or vegetable oil in a frying pan until the oil is hot enough to break a few mustard seeds.
  • 2)Now add the chopped onions, few curry leaves and slit green chilies and fry.
  • 3)To this, add a mixture of turmeric, chilli powder and paprika powder in half a cup of water.
  • 4)When the oil begins to clear, add the remaining spices previously ground, half a cup of `puli water` and sufficient additional water to make enough gravy to cover all the fish pieces when cooking subsequently.
  • 5)Add salt as necessary.
  • 6)Cook until the gravy is thick and keep this aside.
  • 7)Next, take a large frying pan. Prepare a bed of curry leaves.
  • 8)Arrange the pieces of fish on this bed. Pour the previously prepared gravy over this. The pieces of fish should be completely covered.
  • 9)Add the remaining curry leaves and `PULI `pieces. Cover with a lid and cook slowly.
  • :- Do not stir, if necessary you can lift the frying pan by its` handle and give it a gentle rotating or rocking motion during cooking to spread the gravy evenly.
  • 10)Stop cooking when the fish pieces are cooked sufficiently and the gravy is thick.
  • :- This preparation is best after it sits for a day or two to allow time for the spices to get in to the fish. In the old days they used `CHATTIES` made of "MANNU" to keep the fish curry in .The curry got better as it stayed in the chatty for some reason.

HOw do i get Kokom puli? how long to soak it in hot water? How much of Kokom puli should be used for this fish curry? Do we throw away the pieces of Kokom puli just like ordinary puli? Another thing about the `Uluva`, do we use Methi powder or should we start with season of methi seeds in coconut oil? Could you be please more clear about the methi seeds or to powder the methi seeds? Please help!

very good recipe. It is not an average or it will not spoil your lunch.myself, my mother and gm make like this but w/o the green chillies. you have to adjust the spices and salt and puli a/c to your taste. suggestion: try using coconut oil and lace it with coc. oil after all done cooking and swirl the chatti around slowly so the oil gets mixed in.

I tried this recipe b/c I was craving fish curry like mom makes, and to my surprise it came out very close. It was a bit spicy, but I suppose one can adjust it to his/her own taste. But a very good recipe for a first time user.

Good one. In the visitor`s comments, Ms.Rani says that its not mentioned where & when Uluva/Methi Uluva has to be added. Please read carefully. In the 5th line, its mentioned to add when the oil clears, the remaining spices previously ground which includes Uluva also.

Hi I just want to comment this. For 1Kg fish 2tbl spoon of Chilly is not sufficient. You can go upto 4 Spoon. If chilli powder is not added sufficient fish curry will give you the revers effect.
