Ingredients for Vellayappam Recipe

Rice - 4 cups
Coconut(grated) - 1 cup
(or cut into small pieces)
Cooked rice - 1/2 cup or one handful
(cooked rice from previous day)
Baking soda - 1/4 tsp
(I use yeast - 1/2 pkt or 4 gm)
Salt - As reqd





Preparation Method of Vellayappam Recipe
To make the batter:- 1)Soak rice for 4 - 6 hours. 2)Dissolve the yeast in some warm water. 3)Grind the rice along with the grated coconut & cooked rice thoroughly. 4)Now add the dissolved yeast & salt. 5)After mixing in all the ingredients, keep the batter to ferment overnight. 6)The following morning, the batter would have fermented & is now ready to make the appams. To make Vellayappam:- 1)Pour some(4 tbsp) batter into the appa chatti(the pan) and rotate the pan to get a thin layer of batter on the sides, with more batter in the middle. 2)Keep it covered and cook on medium flame for about a minute to make Vellayappam. 3)When cooked, take the Vellayappam out with a spatula and it is ready to serve. :- Vellayappam is Best if served with Stew(a dish made with potatoes, onions & coconut milk).

Comments	In Malabar we call this Vellayappam. In Travancore people call this pallappam.So stop the confusion. This appam looks like an egg, sunny side up with lace edges. So guys give it a rest and enjoy the receipe.

Comments	This looks like half pallapam and half vallayapam. For Kottayam style Pallapam we use coconut milk instead of grated coconut. Grated coconut is used in making vallayapam and best comes out if use Basmati.In kottayam style vallayapam we add little jeerakam also before making.

Comments	Forgot to add that the type of rice has not been specified in the recipe which is a must.Usually its raw rice that is soaked and ground withcooked boiled rice.

Comments	This is called vellayappam in Malabar , my native place. We don`t have palappams there which are named so only in the south of Kerala. If we make it with roasted rice powder then coconut milk is added and beaten and in olden days toddy . Yeast is a new substitute for toddy. This recipe is a n easy version which is how we make it these days.Hope nobody is confused anymore!

Comments	this recipe has come out well.actually it is a fusion of palappam and vellayappam.in travancore side palappam is made with coconut milk instead of grated coconut with crispy thin sides and vellayappam is made in this way but it will be made on a thawa like dosa by adding jeera and small onion.in malabaar side palappam is called vellayappam.any way try this. it is different.

Comments	hey.. actually this is the recipe for palappam. vellayappam and kallappam are different i think.in vellayappam and kallappam one, we will turn the other side like dosa, for other cover with lid. i was surfing for that recipe.

Comments	Looks like it`s a confused mallu`s recipe. Sorry ..not to discourage you. This is palappam recipe with some part missing. Vellayappam needs a few small onions and jeera ground along with the rice.

Comments	This dough preparation is according to vallayappam. Vallayappam has to be cooked in dosa pan covered just one side. On the other hand palappam uses coconut milk and is to pe cooked in a palappachatti.
