Step 1

For preparing chemeen theeyal in traditional style, first marinate chemeen with turmeric powder and salt. Keep this aside.

Step 2

Soak kudam puli in a little salted water.

Step 3

Heat a pan and dry roast grated coconut to a golden brown color. Add red chilly powder, fenugreek powder and coriander powder. Stir for a few seconds and remove from fire. Grind to a fine paste.

Step 4

Heat coconut oil in a saucepan and fry shallots, green chillies and curry leaves.

Step 5

Add marinated prawns, ground coconut paste, kudam puli and enough water to cook the chemeen.

Step 6

Boil the mixture and simmer in low heat until done. Check whether salt is required. Do not overcook since chemeen tends to become hard.

7)Chemeen theeyal in traditional style is ready. Serve hot with rice, pathiri etc.
