Ingredients

Directions

Step 1

Heat half the oil in a pan.

Step 2

Add coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds and red chillies.

Step 3

Saute for 5 mins, until chillies begin to go dark in colour.

Step 4

Add onions and fry, stirring constantly, for about 8 mins.

Step 5

When the onions are soft, remove the mixture and spread on a tray to cool.

Step 6

When cool, grind it to a very fine paste along with tamarind pulp and a little water, if necessary. Keep it aside.

Step 7

Heat the remaining oil in a deep frying pan.

Step 8

Splutter mustard seeds.

Step 9

Add curry leaves, garlic and turmeric.

Step 10

Add the ground onion paste and stir well.

Step 11

Add water to make a sauce consistency.

Step 12

Add jaggery and salt and mix well.

Step 13

Bring the contents to a boil.

Step 14

Remove any scum from the surface with a slotted spoon.

Step 15

Add the fish pieces.

Step 16

Cook for approximately ten mins, until the fish is cooked.

This recipe is really good. I was looking for a new recipe today and found this. I made it in half an hour. Just too good. Sounds like an old Travancore dish. Yummy.
