Ingredients

Directions

Step 1

Wash and soak dal separately
for four hours.

Step 2

Drain the dals in a colandar for 1 hour. There should be hardly any water left on the dal. If the dal is too wet, the vada will break apart.

Step 3

Pat the dal dry with a paper towel.

Step 4

With a food processor, the grinding will be easy. Grind the dals separately and make a paste.

Step 5

In the last portion of your grinding (if you have a food processor), add the onions, ginger and curry leaves, so they get minced further.

Step 6

Mix well the whole mixture.

Step 7

Add asoefetida powder, salt and powdered red pepper for taste.

Step 8

Shape into patties and deep fry till Parippu Vada (Dal Vada) become golden brown.

Step 9

:- Parippu Vada (Dal Vada) is ready.

Step 10

:- Serve Parippu Vada (Dal Vada) with coconut chutney.

Hi.. the recipe is in general fine, but I think it will be even better to use a meat grinder to grind the soaked dal instead of using the food processor. Also instead of using red chilli powder it might be better to use red dried chillies which when fried gives out a special flavour and taste.

Very good recipe. Suggestion: two dried red chillies, soaked and ground with the dals in place of red chilli powder gives the vada a true kerala taste.

Why not try with chana dal instead of red gram and masoor dals? And with the onions and others put 5-6 black pepper corns, it adds to the taste.

I used split peas instead of both dals and it turned out to be excellent. Looks like I`ll be making parippu vada more frequently now. Thanks a lot.
