Easy to make naadan thoran with Bittergourd(Pavakka)

Step 1

Clean the bittergourd well and remove the seeds found inside it.

Step 2

Finely chop the pavakka.

Step 3

Mix together finely chopped pavakka, onions, green chillies, grated coconut, turmeric powder and salt.

Step 4

Heat oil in a pan or a kadai.

Step 5

Splutter mustard seeds and sautT dry red chillies and curry leaves.

Step 6

Add the pavakka-coconut mixture and mix well.

Step 7

Cover and cook on a low flame.

Step 8

Stir occasionally.

Step 9

When it gets cooked, remove the lid and continue to cook, till done.

i made the dish but it came out very bitter and then i tried adding some sugar to it. That made it tasty. My hubby loves this dish now. Thanks for posting !

This is a very tasty recipe but less people dont try to make it often due to the bitterness. I feel if you add a little vinegar to the chopped pavakka and keep it for one hour in the refrigerator it reduces the bitterness. Adding 1 tsp sugar during the cooking also does the same.

To reduce the bitterness i would advise you to sprinkle salt when u chop the gourd n keep it aside for some time n then squeeze out the water n then add the rest of the ingredients in it n fry it..

This Receipe was very good. Authentic taste and easy to make.The bitterness of the bittergourd is totally taken off and we loved it.
