Wash, drain and pick over peas. Soak in 2 cups cold water for 1-4 hours. Melt butter in soup pot, saute chopped onions, carrots and celery until onion softens. Add peas and liquid to pot, add additional liquid and bring to a boil. lower heat and simmer for 1-2 hours, or until peas start to disintergrate. Stir occasionally. Remove bay leaf, mash with potato masher add ham and cook 15 more minutes to blend flavors.
