Step 1

Grind the rice, red gram, black pepper and cumin seeds into a course mixture.

Step 2

Heat oil in a pan.

Step 3

Add mustard seeds.

Step 4

When the seeds pop add red gram, Bengal gram and black gram.

Step 5

When they turn golden brown, add 3 cups of water.

Step 6

When it boils, add the salt, asafoetida and curry leaves.

Step 7

To this, add the ground mixture of rice, cumin seeds and black pepper.

Step 8

Stir it continuously until the mixture thickens and the rice is cooked.

Step 9

Close the mixture with a lid on low heat.

Step 10

:- If using a pressure cooker, allow the mixture to cook until the first whistle.

My late mum do make this delicious rice upuma. But she addds grated coconut. Taste very good.

I tried this reciepe and it turned out pretty well . Just a lil tip to this reciepe if freshly grated coconut is added to this it just enhances the taste by ten folds. Awesome base reciepe though. Cheers
