Step 1

Heat the rava till it becomes light brown and keep it aside.

Step 2

Heat the ghee and fry the mustard seeds.

Step 3

Add curry leaves, chopped onions, slit chillies, crushed ginger and coriander leaves to it and fry for 2 minutes.

Step 4

Add 2 and a half cups of water and the reqd salt and leave it to boil.

Step 5

Add rava to the boiling water little by little, stirring the water properly.

Step 6

Cook until it is soft and thick.

Step 7

:- Upma is ready.

Step 8

:- Serve upma hot with coconut chutney.

Super delicious.... great recipe... my upma used to be horrible until i read ur recipe... now i can confidently prepare sumptuous upma even if i hav guests at home.. thanx a ton Pinky..

Very true vamsi, that way upma is crispier also and soft also. We should add semolina first and then water..

Hi Pinky ..u sure have a lot o recipes...I am(was) a hobbyist myself..now that i am working i dont get 2 try out new items..this recipe is one of my favourites..as a friday morning special(holiday)..i just top it with bullseye fried in butter and...:)

A nice variation is to add 1 grated carrot after sauteing the onions & green chillies; even very tender french beans (3-4) chopped fine added to this tastes nice.To make it rich you can add nuts & raisins while frying these. I find it better to add pre roasted semolina to the fried veggies,stir for a minute & pour boiling water into it.( 2 cups water for 1cup semolina).Simmer covered for 2 minutes. Then open & stir gently.(try & comment )

its really tasty. add more curry leaves n little grated coconut to make this upma tastier. u can avoid adding corrider leaves ...
