  1. Peel and cube the plantain and yam.
  2. In a kadai, add plantain and yam pieces along with turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, curry leaves and 1 cup of water.
  3. Cook till the vegetables are done.
  4. Meanwhile, grind together coconut, pepper, cumin seeds and green chilly to a fine paste.
  5. Add this paste to the cooked vegetables.
  6. Boil them well stirring continuously.
  7. Add salt.
  8. Finally add curd to this and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes.
  9. :- Do not boil.
  10. Splutter mustard seeds, red chilly, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves in a pan.
  11. Add this to the gravy.
  12. :- The simple and tasty Kaalan is ready to be served..
  13. :- It is good to use bit sour type curd for preparing this dish.
