Khichadi

A variation of the traditional rice-dal dish

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups Rice Parboiled rice or Puzhukkalari
  • 1 1/3 cups Red gram Thuvaraparippu
  • 2 nos Onion chopped, medium
  • 2 nos Tomato chopped, large
  • 3 nos Green chillies
  • 4 - Garlic pods
  • 1" piece Ginger
  • 1 tsp Chilly powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • Asafoetida A pinch, Kayam
  • 1/3 tsp Garam masala optional
  • Salt As reqd
  • 8 - Fenugreek seeds Uluva
  • 4 nos Cloves Grambu
  • 6 nos Peppercorns Kurumulaku
  • 1 stick Cinnamon Karugapatta
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds Jeerakam
  • 2 tbsp Groundnut/Sunflower oil

Instructions
 

  • Clean the rice and red gram and soak it in water.
  • Heat 2 tbsp of oil in the pressure cooker.
  • Add fenugreek seeds followed by cloves, pepper, cinnamon and cumin seeds.
  • Add onions and crushed ginger, chillies and garlic and saute it.
  • Add chilly powder, coriander powder, asafoetida, garam masala and salt and mix well.
  • Add tomatoes, mix well and cook for 3 - 4 mins.
  • Drain off the water from rice and red gram and add it to the mixture in the cooker.
  • Mix well and cook for 5 mins.
  • Keep stirring so that it doesn`t stick to the bottom of the cooker.
  • Add enough water (appx. 7 cups) so that there is a layer of 1.5 cm of water floating on top of the rice-dal mixture.
  • Mix well and then close the cooker with it`s lid.
  • Pressure cook upto 3 whistles.
  • :- Serve hot with curd and pickle.
