In top of double boiler combine 1/3 cup sugar, flour, salt, egg yolks, milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Cook and stir constantly, until custard thickens.
Line bottom and sides of a baking dish (1 1/2-quart size) with vanilla wafers, alternate layers of custard mix, wafers, and berries.
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Add the 1 tablespoon sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
Spread meringue over custard and bake in a oven until meringue is nicely browned.
