Step 1

Chop beetroot into very small pieces.

Step 2

Chop onion, garlic and green chillies into very small pieces.

Step 3

Grate half portion of a small coconut.

Step 4

Mix beetroot, onion, garlic, green chillies, coconut, chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt. Keep aside for 10 minutes.

Step 5

Splutter mustard seeds in hot oil.

Step 6

Add dried red chillies and curry leaves.

Step 7

Add the beetroot mix into it and cover it with a lid and cook in low flame.

Step 8

Keep mixing at regular intervals for 10 to 15 minutes until it is well cooked.


I was craving for our nadan beetroot thoran and I grabbed beetroot when I saw it in the market..Very simple to prepare and very tasty. I wasnt sure if my hubby would like beetroot, but he loved it and now its regular at home. And the colour is a visual feast!


Thanks a lot for the recipe. I was struggling to make beetroot thoran coz my pregnant wife craves for it a lot. It was very easy to make and my wife is really loving it a lot.
