Lentils(Moong Dal) with Vegetables - Oriyan style

Step 1

Boil the dal with salt and turmeric powder in a vessel for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Add potato, taro root and squash to it and allow it to boil for 10 minutes. Keep the vessel covered.

Step 3

Add brinjal and boil it for 5 more minutes, till everything is cooked.

Step 4

Heat ghee in a pan.

Step 5

Add cumin seeds, chopped ginger and red chillies.

Step 6

When the cumin seeds splutter, add dal.

Step 7

Add the cooked vegetables into it and mix well.

Step 8

Add cumin seeds and red chilly powder fried in ghee.

Step 9

:- It smells not only terrific but is tasty, easy to prepare and healthy to eat.


hi, well i`ve stayed in orissa for a few years n as far as i know cumin n red chillies are not fried in ghee but are dry roasted , powdered and then added in the end to the lentil and vegetables mix for flavour. Also seasoning is done with panch phoran, i.e. mustard, cumin, kalonji, sounf n methi seeds in ghee. a pinch of asaefotida can also be added.


What is Taro Root - (In Hindi/Tamil/Malayalam) Not yet tried
