Chemmeen Mulakittathu or Prawns Mulakittathu is one of the blessings that we usually enjoy on the Malabar coast that is rich in fresh seafood. Fresh seafood and fish cooked in clay pot gives a different taste that i can’t explain. Chemmeen Mulakittathu is an authentic traditional styled dish that is quite spicy and hot. The dish is quite popular in Kerala Cuisine. The people who love spicy food will surely love this dish. This curry gives a delicate balance of sour, tangy and spicy flavors. There are different varieties of fish curries in Kerala, but i bet this one tastes the best. When it comes to sea food, both North and South Kerala preparation methods are different. This is a typical Malabar prawns curry not much different from other mulakittathu recipes. For kids you can surely reduce the chilly flavor. Kids usually prefer mildly spiced dishes.

What makes Chemmeen Mulakittathu unique is the special flavor of fenugreek. Fenugreek is the main ingredient here and it gives a distinct flavor to fish curry dishes. It is best to cook this curry with coconut oil for authenticity, but you can use your favorite cooking oil as well. It just takes 30 minutes to make this one and you will get this delicious curry which your family will just love . Prawns are nutritious rich in protein and other vital nutrients required for body. Ingredients
  

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in a clay pot, add sliced shallots, ginger, garlic, green chilies and salt.
  • Once they start to turn light brown, lower the flame and add turmeric powder, and Kashmiri chilli powder . Sauté till the raw smell goes away.
  • Add Kudampuli along with the water and prawns. Sauté well.
  • Add hot water to cook prawns and salt , and increase the heat.
  • Once it boils, cover and cook for 10 minutes or till the prawns gets cooked.
  • Heat oil in a pan for tempering, add mustard seed and let it splutter , add dry red chilies, sliced shallots and curry leaves.
  • Add fenugreek powder, Kashmiri chilli powder and roast on low flame.
  • Switch off the heat and add this to the curry.
  • Leave it covered for a minute.
  • Serve with hot rice..
