Cherupayar Curry is one of the simplest and tastiest of vegetarian dishes that can be cooked in a jiffy. Whole cooked green gram are generally prepared from dried beans by boiling until they are soft. Green gram broken its calls Moong dal. Moong dal are light yellow in colour when their skins are removed.The nutritious side dish is a favorite with rice, gruel or even chappathi and also with idly and dosa. For cooking green gram:-
  • Cherupayar - 1 1/2 cup
  • Water - 2-3 cups
  • Salt(As reqd) -
For seasoning:-
  • Cocunut oil - 2 tbsp
  • Shallots(sliced, Kunjulli) - 8-10 nos
  • Curry leaves(As reqd) -
  • Mustard seeds(A pinch) -
  • Red chilly(onakka mulakku) - 2-3 nos
  • Red chilly powder - 1 tsp

Instructions
  1. For preparing Cherupayar Curry, first wash cherupayar properly and put it in a pressure cooker followed by water and salt.
  2. Cook the cherupayar for 2-3 whistles.
  3. Remove it from flame and keep it aside for some time.
  4. In another frying pan or kadai, heat coconut oil.
  5. Splutter mustard seeds followed by shallots, red chilly(broken in two), curry leaves and finally add chilly powder and saute for 30 seconds. (Make sure you do not burn the chilly powder)
  6. Finally add this seasoning onto the cooked cherupayar. Stir it well.
  7. Serve it hot with Chappathi or Rice or Kanji.
