Cherupayar Thoran is a delicious stir fry prepared from Green Gram. Cherupayar Thoran is a very popular and traditional dish in Kerala, very simple and humble, enjoyed with kanji or rice gruel. This is a protein rich food at the same time very relaxing and soothing for your tummy. Also termed Moong Dal Stir Fry, the dish is very economical and affordable for all sections of society. This is one of the easiest of dishes that requires very minimum ingredients too. Moong Dal Stir Fry is a favorite with kids too as they find it not too hot and spicy. For preparing the delicious and traditional styled dish, first wash and soak the moong dal in water for around 5- 6 hrs.
Drain the water used for soaking, and cook the dal in fresh water. Close and cook on medium low flame till the moong dal is soft. Make sure that the dal doesn’t overcook and turn mushy.
