Gothambu Payasam is a traditional styled Onam dish, very tasty and appealing with a slight crunch of the fried coconut and cashew bits. Gothambu Payasam tastes heavenly and you will definitely ask for more. Cooking the dish in a pressure cooker saves much time and effort. While cooking in cooker makes sure that the broken wheat is not overcooked and mushy, since cooking has to be continued for a few more minutes with coconut milk. This is a nutritious dish very apt for growing up kids and even elderly parents. This is one of the easiest of payasam dishes and requires minimum ingredients that are readily available. Instructions
  1. For preparing the tasty payasam, first pressure cook the cleaned broken wheat with 3 ½ cup of water. Cook it on high flame for 6-7 whistles. Let the pressure be released on its own and open the cooker.
  2. Meanwhile melt jaggery in ½ cup of water and make it completely melted.
  3. Pour the melted jaggery syrup into the cooked wheat through a strainer(arippa).
  4. Now mix it.
  5. Add 1 tbsp of ghee.
  6. Mix it till jaggery is completely dried and add medium thick coconut milk, Mix well and let it boil till a thick consistency is approached.
  7. Now add thick coconut milk. Let it boil for 5 mints.
  8. Now keep a pan add 1 tbsp ghee. Add coconut pieces, raisins and cashews and fry.
  9. Add this to the cooked payasam.
  10. Add cardamom powder and mix and close it. It is cardamom that add that extra flavor to the payasam.
  11. :- Colour of payasam depend on the colour of jiggery. The delicious payasam is ready.
