Home Made Solkadhi

SobhaKesavan S

Home Made Solkadhi also termed ‘Solkadi’ or ‘Kokum Kadhi’ is an essential and vital drink relished during hot summers to cool down your system. This tart flavored drink is quite popular in the state of Maharashtra and is commonly served during festive occasions like Diwali. Visitors are first served a glass of Solkadhi or the Kokum curry. You will discover the dish in restaurants serving Goan food. A glass of the dark pink colored drink is served long with any thali meal, be it vegetarian or non-vegetarian. This beverage is an important part of Konkan, Goan and Malvani Cuisine. The specialty of this beverage is the digestive and cooling properties making it counter perfectly with heavily spiced dishes of western coastal areas. Home Made Solkadhi has a taste similar to buttermilk with savory undertones. As with many Indian dishes, Solkadhi can be prepared in different ways. There is Solkadhi prepared without coconut milk but the recipe I have given here requires coconut milk.

Home Made Solkadhi is healthy and very refreshing that basically requires a few simple ingredients commonly available at homes. This is my dear aunt’s recipe who is no more whom I had deeply loved. Solkadhi is uniquely prepared, a concoction of sweet flavored coconut milk, tangy flavored Kokum and tempered Indian spices. At home we prefer Solkadhi as an after meal drink since it aids digestion that is light on your tummy. This is an easy to prepare beverage provided you use packaged or canned coconut milk. You save time and it takes just a few minutes to prepare Home Made Solkadhi. If you are using fresh grated coconut then extract and use only the first thick milk. Do not use coconut powder for extracting milk since the dish will curdle. You can discover Home Made Solkadhi recipe here.
