Idli Upma

Idli Upma is a simple snack or breakfast usually prepared with leftover idli. A simple, no frills homely upma recipe made with leftover idlis. This recipe is an easy way to use leftover ones to make a quick breakfast and gets done in 15 minutes. You can use fresh ones or which have been refrigerated. if using which have been refrigerated, then allow them to come at room temperature before making the upma. There are many variations you can do in idli upma like adding some grated veggies, boiled peas and even adding dry fruits like cashews. You can also add roasted peanuts. Spice it up more or less and you can make the upma the way you like. Idli podi can also be added. Here you go with recipe.

  • Crush the idlis with hand and then with finger tips as much as possible to loosen them up.
  • Heat oil in a wok/kadai.
  • Add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add urad dhal and asafoetida. Give it a nice stir.
  • Add turmeric powder, required salt, onions, green chilies and curry leaves. Saute till the onions turn pink.
  • Now add the crushed idlis and mix thoroughly.
  • Add the chopped coriander leaves and give it a nice stir.
  • Serve hot as an evening snack.
