Khichadi
A variation of the traditional rice-dal dish

Thuvaraparippu

Asafoetida
A pinch, Kayam

Groundnut/Sunflower
oil
Instructions
Clean the rice and red gram and soak it in
water
.
Heat 2 tbsp of
oil
in the pressure cooker.
Add
fenugreek seeds
followed by
cloves
, pepper, cinnamon and
cumin seeds
.
Add onions and crushed
ginger
, chillies and
garlic
and saute it.
Add chilly powder,
coriander powder
, asafoetida,
garam masala
and
salt
and mix well.
Add tomatoes, mix well and cook for 3 - 4 mins.
Drain off the
water
from rice and red gram and add it to the mixture in the cooker.
Mix well and cook for 5 mins.
Keep stirring so that it doesn`t stick to the bottom of the cooker.
Add enough
water
(appx. 7 cups) so that there is a layer of 1.5 cm of
water
floating on top of the rice-dal mixture.
Mix well and then close the cooker with it`s lid.
Pressure cook upto 3 whistles.
:- Serve hot with curd and pickle.
