Malabar Style Kozhi Mulakittathu is a lip smacking special delicacy of Kozhikode region. Chicken is cooked in a spicy red colored curry sauce and is usually served with ghee rice or pathiri. This is one of the easiest versions of Malabar chicken dishes that requires simple ingredients. These dishes are our favorite ones and we are never tired of cooking them over and over again. The red aromatic gravy is the specialty of the dish. Kozhi mullakittathu dishes are quite popular in Kerala Cuisine but this dish beats them all. This is a traditional Malabar dish. Choosing country chicken yields the best results. Even though i have heard of Malabar Style Kozhi Mulakittathu, i have never got a chance to taste the curry. So this time when i bought chicken, i ended up preparing Malabar Style Kozhi Mulakittathu. I have prepared the dish from broiler chicken yet it tasted awesome. The curry has a unique flavor and aroma that reminds the authenticity of Kerala Cuisine. The red colored gravy looks real attractive.

There are endless variations for a tasty chicken curry and today’s Red Chicken Curry has the basic ingredients as any normal chicken curry. The only difference is the spicy red colored thick gravy. This brings a tremendous appeal to the dish. You can adjust the spiciness of the dish as per your choice. If you want you can add more water for a lighter gravy consistency.   • Marinate the cleaned chicken pieces in masala powders : chilly powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder by adding salt as required and keep it aside.
  • Take a blender and add onion and crushed ginger garlic.
  • Crush it.
  • Heat 2 tablespoon of oil in a pan and splutter cumin seeds and add green chilly and curry leaves. Saute for few seconds.
  • Then add crushed onion and saute till the raw smell goes off and the colour turns into light brown.
  • Then add sliced tomatoes and saute till soft.
  • Add marinated chicken and 1/2 cup hot water. Sauté for 2 minutes and cook in low flame with the pan covered.
  • Stir now and then until done. Open the lid and add curry leaves and a tablespoon of coconut oil, gently mix and switch off the flame. Keep the pan covered for 10 more minutes for getting more flavour from coconut oil and curry leaves.
  • Serve and enjoy.
