Wash and drain the meat pieces. Soak the meat in lemon juice for half an hour.
Half cook the meat in a pot with just enough water, a tbsp of vinegar, 1/4 tsp of ground black pepper and curry leaves.
Heat oil in a pan and stir fry the onions, curry leaves, garlic and green chillies(seeds removed) for 5 minutes until the ingredients look translucent.
Crush the rest of the spices and add them into the pan. Continue to stir fry.
Add the half cooked meat(but not the gravy).
Add potatoes and enough water to cook the potatoes.
Cook until the potatoes and the half cooked meat is done.
I tried this recipe after reading all the positive comments and it came out good. It wasn`t very extra-ordinairy but it was definetely tasty. I thought the two step process was a little complicated (cook mutton in a pot and then frying separately but I managed it OK). The only thing I did different in this recipe is; I added 1 1/2 teaspoon more of Mutton Masala and instead of adding 1 cup coconut milk, I just added half a cup which was plenty. Overall, I would give this recipe a “B” grade. It had a nice, mild, Kerala style curry taste! Thanks!
well, i`ve read all the comments and decided to make it. I added all the spices in a double quantity because of the person i made this for and it turned out to be very tasty, spicy though.
I didn`t add the water to this stew, but the liquid, which i was boiling meat in at first, i wanted the taste of lemon to be strong.
Thank you for the wonderful resipe, we enjoyed! I will definetely cook it again!
Hi Mariamma, An excellent recipe. Thank you very much. I have tried other stew recipies but none wassso easy or tasty as yours. So please do post more non-vegetarian and cake recipies as well.
