A simple pumpkin curry served during Kerala Sadhya - Ramya V

Instructions
 

  • Cook vanpayar(vellapayar) with salt and keep aside.
  • Peel and cut pumpkin into flat 1 inch square pieces.
  • Boil the pumpkin pieces along with green chillies, ginger and salt.
  • Add the cooked vanpyar and boil for a while.
  • Once cooked, add coconut milk.
  • Garnish with curry leaves and coconut oil.
  • :- Serve hot.
  • :- It can even be served as a thick soup by smashing the pumpkin and adding extra water.

    Red beans is important in Olan.It will add more taste.

    This is a real traditional recipe……feels i am back in kerala.

    This is one style of olan. Its not mandatory that the red beans be there in olan. Different parts of Kerala and even different communities have different styles of olan. In my community we have 2 styles – one with matthanga and payaru in coconut oil and another one with kumbalanga in thenga paal.

    What is traditional also changes from region to region even within kerala.I hail from Palakkad and we use vanpayar in our traditional olan recipe.
