Ulli Moru is the simpler version of our traditional Moru Curry without any cooking procedure. My kids love this variety dish and I always bribe them with this to finish their food first. Ulli Moru is refreshing and delicious too. I love all types of spiced buttermilk but Ulli Moru is my favorite with a dense texture. During hot summer this is the apt drink that will hydrate you making you feel relaxed and fine. This drink is usually served after a heavy meal or Sadya. Ulli Moru aids proper digestion and it eases your belly. But unfortunately this drink is available only in remote areas of Malabar. Hence you can term Ulli Moru as a traditional Malabari dish. I have friends in Malabar and this is how I came to know of this dish and got the recipe. Cooked rice is blended with coconut and added into the spiced buttermilk. This is the specialty and uniqueness of Malabar based Ulli Moru.
The picturesque Malabar areas blend well with their traditional delicacies and I am a big fan of this area. In my area we do not get buttermilk locally from store so I have to buy thick curd and blend into buttermilk texture adding enough water. But in my dream Malabar, quality buttermilk is sold locally and hence preparation of Ulli Moru takes just a few minutes. You can skip or reduce blending shallots with coconut if you do not prefer so. And of course you can cut down on green chillies if kids are involved. Kids do not like hot flavors. They want dishes mild. Ulli Moru is healthy and very good for you and definitely one of the most easiest of dishes. You can explore a well detailed Ulli Moru recipe here that can be easily prepared at home.
